Mid 80's band Lee Jennings on guitar and vocals, Lee Ellaway on bass, Trevor Mulholland on synth, Chris Beckett on guitar and Paul Monk on drums.

The Advocates entered the 1985 Rock Contest but never made it to the finals.

The same line-up had previously been called The Beach Party.

THE CATHERINE EFFECT

Catherine Effect were a 90's alternative band that initially formed to enter the Rock Competition but ended up hanging around for around four years. Formed around Alex Fleming, vocals and Paul Woodwright on guitar the first line-up featured Nikki Batley on vocals, Dave Jack on bass and Mike Stockwell on keyboards and beats.

Nikki was later replaced by Sarah Giles. They disbanded on the night of the year 2000 after the last "proper" gig at Square (before current owners took over), The Millenium Ball.

After Public Safety Unit split up Jo Ahmed took his samplers and beats and started The Checkists.

He was joined by Peter Herbert on drums and Billy Dawkins. Also on drums. A beat heavy band.

THE CHERRY PICKERS

The Cherry Pickers were a short lived band formed by Kerry and Robin Kohler after The Fascinators had split up.

The Cherry Pickers were Robin Kohler on bass, Kerry Ayres on vocals with Jo Clack on guitar and Billy Dawkins on drums.

They were short lived and only played a handful of gigs before going there separate ways.

THE CLINIC

Early 80's band The Clinic were Mark Walsh on guitar, Joe Quill on drums, James Carolan on bass and Paul Carolan on guitar and vocals.

They entered the 1983 Rock Contest but failed to reach the finals.

Mark left to start Some Other Day and Joe went on to join The Tender Trap as their drummer.

Formed in mid 80's and following on from The Cougars, The Cobras were Cliff Bassett on guitar and voicals, Dave Thomas on bass and vocals, Dave Ward on guitar and Eric Swaine on drums.

Cobras can still be seen rocking around the area.

Formed in early 80's The Cougars were Cliff Bassett on guitar and voicals, Mac on bass and vocals, Doug Ball on guitar, Eric Swaine on drums and Roy Brazier on saxaphone.

Cougars can still very very occasionally be seen rocking around the area.

Drawing from such diverse influences as Captain Beefheart, The Beatles and Crazy Horse, the Culprits live shows have become the stuff of local legend and their discordant fuzz-rock is more than able to herniate your brain through your ears.

Culprits are Garry Allen, guitar, Will Johnson, guitar, Mark "Falc" Perry, vocals, James Johnson, bass and Steve Williams on drums.

When Hedgehog changed their name to The Fascinators in the early 80's the line-up was Robin Kohler, bass, Steve Izzard, guitar, Martin Bailey, vocals, Stephen Banks, keyboards and Kevin Ball on drums.

Matt Mckintyre replaced Kevin on drums and after that Mickey Howard replaced Steve Izzard on guitar and Kerry Ayres replaced Martin Bailey on vocals.

It was this line-up that reached the 1981 Rock Contest Finals.

Everyones favourite doctors. These guys got pretty big lacally for a while and always packed out The Square.

They were Ian "Ben" Williams on guitar and vocals, Greg Camburn on saxaphone, Cliff Newell on guitar, Ian Purves on bass and Nick Williams on drums.

They recorded a tape called 5 Easy Pieces.

THE GANGSTERS

The Gangsters were massive around the start of the punk movement and produced an album and a couple of singles.

The Gangsters were Richard Holgarth on guitars and vocals, Alan Meadows on drums, Pete Capaldi on bass, and Bill Meadows on guitar and vocals. Terry Hardy (drums) replaced Alan and Martin Holden replaced Pete on bass by the time they came to record. Steve Horton (The Sods) played keys on their album.

The final line-up replaced Alan on drums with Billy Sticks.

THE INDESTRUCTABLE BEAT

Another Harlow "supergroup" consisting of Steve Drewett, guitar and vocals, Adam Amore, saxaphone, Isaac Prevost, drums, Sarah Ross, vocals, Greg Camburn, saxaphone, Mac, bass and trombone and Neil Tye on percussion.

Tony Bennett replaced Isaac on drums and Ian Bristow replaced Ian on percussion. The final line-up saw them drop back to a 5-piece, loosing Sarah along the way.

The Indestructable Beat were forme between Neurotics splitting and reforming in the early 2000's.
